We have some exciting news to share. Last year, New Asia Currents (NAC) interviewed Dr Wang on her publications of pre-Columbian transoceanic voyages (here). This year they have done three interviews. Here is a summary of the three NAC Focus interviews.
“Rewriting the Age of Discovery“
In the first interview, Dr Wang recounts how her reading of San Bao Tai Jian Xi Yang Ji (《三宝太监西洋记》)—translated as An Account of the Western World Voyage of the San Bao Eunuch—by Luo Maodeng in 1597 and the analysis of Kunyu Wanguo Quantu (abbreviated as KWQ) 《坤舆万国全图》—translated as Complete Geographical Map of All the Kingdoms of the World.
What stood out were the striking similarities between the Chinese records and places conventional thought would have us believe was—at that time—the “unknown world” to the Chinese. This occurred centuries before they were “discovered” during the Age of Discovery. This was the catalyst for Dr Wang’s journey of her own discoveries.

“The Hidden History of New Zealand: Chinese Mariners in the South Pacific“
NAC’s second interview focused on one of Dr Wang’s most explosive claims that the Chinese sailed to New Zealand. Her work expanded on the findings of the late British marine engineer and surveyor, TC Bell, who had left behind extensive surveys of sites that contain evidence of Chinese presence in New Zealand. These helped her contextualise the KWQ’s record of New Zealand and Māori and Kiwi history in the context of World history.

“Zheng He’s Global Exploration Offers New Narrative of Discovery“
The last interview’s main questions where how Dr Wang arrived at the conclusions this would be evidence of Chinese presence, whether the technology they all allowed this, the circumstances surrounding the Ming dynasty’s isolation, how it relates to the dawn of the Age of Discovery and colonialism at large. Here she urges us to remember that researchers are obligated to find the truth and to be honest about who they are—as people and as professionals. Most importantly, Dr Wang hope to inspire the next generation to chase who they really are without worrying about who others think they are.
